The Samaritans365 club welcomed the founder of Positive Pocket to our final meeting of the year.  Becca Zerbo, 17, explained, “I created Positive Pocket in 2011 in response to a bullying incident, which left me feeling sad, angry, embarrassed, upset, and anxious. That night, I went on the computer, typed up some of my favorite positive sayings and included some pictures that I liked – ones that made me feel good. I printed them out, put clear tape over it so they wouldn’t rip, and placed them in my jean pocket. The next day, when I was feeling anxious or down, I discretely pulled out my card, read it to myself to remind myself that I’m alright, and placed it back in my pocket. Do you know what? It worked! I had rediscovered my strength, and self-confidence within me!”

She educated our club members on her journey and each student created a canvas painting to take with them.  She calls these “empowerprints”. They put their handprint and a positive message on them.

Becca aims to inspire, motivate, and empower those who have been affected by bullying.  She has created many ways to spread the positivity such as classroom kits, a mobile app and even a children’s book!  She is truly such an inspiration! She not only rose above the negative effects of bullying, she turned that terrible experience into something positive- for herself and others.  Her intrinsic quality of resiliency propelled her forward. I know she serves as a positive role model for everyone who hears her story.

The Positive Pocket Kit is a package ready to send out to schools all around the nation. It includes ready-to-use curriculum and materials that any teacher or counselor can use in their classroom or school.  It educates students on how they can improve their self-esteem and self-confidence, and the importance of standing up for themselves and each other.

The new Positive Pocket mobile app gives students the ability to stay encouraged throughout the school day. The app is free, and if you like,  it will send you a daily inspirational quote to help brighten your day.

The Positive Pocket philosophy serves to remind you that,

“YOU Matter and YOU Make a Difference!”

I had the opportunity to meet Becca at a photo shoot for Spotlight Families Magazine last month. She and my daughter are both part of the Spotlight Kids Team. My younger daughter was very intimidated by the large group of kids. She is inherently very shy and began to cry and hide behind me. Becca came right up to us and introduced herself. At that point Becca did not know who I was or that it was my club she was coming to visit! She knelt down to my 5 year old and asked her if she wanted to wear one of her special bracelets for the picture. She talked to her for a little and offered to hold her hand and stand together for the photos. This gesture and anecdote really reflect how special this young lady is!
