World Gratitude Day was started by the United Nations Mediation Group. The official beginning was said to be at a Thanksgiving dinner, honoring a mediation Guru, in Hawaii in 1965.  Each person there pledged to hold a Gratitude Day in his or her own country on September 21.  It was first formally celebrated in 1977.

“The United Nations International Day of Peace, September 21, provides an opportunity for all humanity to come together, in spirit and in action, to forward the ideals of and conditions for peace. This global day is observed by hundreds of millions of citizens in cities, towns and villages worldwide, and thousands of NGOs, as well as citizens and governments, organize and engage in diverse peace-related activities on and around this global day. ”

There’s an entire science and psychology dedicated to studying gratitude. Research at the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley has shown there are actual health benefits to practicing gratitude such as:

  • Stronger immune systems and lower blood pressure;

  • Higher levels of positive emotions;

  • More joy, optimism, and happiness;

  • Acting with more generosity and compassion;

  • Feeling less lonely and isolated

Gratitude is a practice.

It takes practice to change your mindset and shift to a more positive attitude of gratitude.

Last year, during the month of November, we would sit together as a family before bedtime (almostevery night) and each write one thing we were grateful for in our gratitude journals. The four of us would take turns reading what we wrote. The process of writing things down is very important. It sends messages to the brain and helps with processing the information. It increases our awareness and helps create more meaning. The kids got really into it and would remind us if we forgot! We talk a lot about gratitude here, not just before Thanksgiving. It’s an important theme in our family.

There are many activities you can do at home to nurture this that can be made to fit into your family’s schedule and lifestyle.  They don’t have to be such a big commitment, but they will have a big impact!

Samaritans365 Foundation believes that by contributing to society and improving their community, the children develop a sense of gratitude and a great sense of personal confidence. They get to experience the feelings of fulfillment as they perform these acts of charity.

There are 2 wonderful local events this week to celebrate gratitude and kindness that support Samaritans365.  The first is a “Shop for Cause” day at Bloomingdale’s on September 21, 2016. You can shop at any time; when you deposit a duplicate receipt, Bloomingdale’s will generously donate 10% to Samaritans365. At 12:00, Laura Reiss, founder of Samaritans365 will be speaking about the importance of gratitude in our lives, as well as local yoga instructors, Leslie Glickman of Yoga Journey and Mary Ann Morgan-Fried of Mat Matterz.

The 2nd event is the Kindness Movement Celebration.

Please join us as we celebrate the legacy of kindness we are creating for ourselves and future generations with delicious food provided by Farmer’s Table, inspiring conversation, exciting silent auction items, open bar, live paintings, music, and many opportunities to contribute toward making the world a better place for all children, everywhere.
