The Style Of STEM

The STEM theme is a strong trend in girls fashion right now. STEM stands for Science Technology, Engineering, and Math.  Sometimes you may see STEAM instead, and the “A” stands for Arts.  “Girl power” and “positive messages” are themes that have been prevalent in girls fashion for quite some time now, but as I was doing my back to school shopping, I saw more and more science themes in girls fashion. I don’t know if it’s a new trend or just something I have opened up my eyes to because my younger daughter really became interested in science, especially space, last school year in 2nd grade. It started when she was assigned a project on a story book character last fall. She actually chose a biography about Sally Ride. She (we) read the whole biography, did an timeline of her life, and decorated a plastic pumpkin like Sally Ride’s NASA helmet. At that point, she was all in! Even for Halloween, she wanted to dress up as a scientist. It was quite challenging to find her a costume too. None of the traditional Halloween stores carried scientist or astronaut costumes for girls. I ended up finding her a Melissa and Doug Scientist Role Play Set on Amazon and we made that work.

Seeing STEM Everywhere

I think it’s so important that young girls start seeing careers in STEM as viable options.  These career fields have historically been male dominated. The more girls become familiar with these fields, the more interest they can develop from a young age. Fashion is helping to make STEM visible and fun to wear. With STEM themes in fashion becoming integrated into daily life like this,  the exposure of these career fields to young girls is increasing more and more.

I applaud the designers at brands like Cat and Jack by Target, Old Navy and Peek for creating STEM themed clothing. Nordstrom carries a nice selection of STEM themed clothing and accessories too. I created a round up of some of my favorite STEM themed fashion items for science-loving girls. I’m happy that it’s so easy right now for my daughter to combine her love of science with her passion for fashion!

STEM Is Here To Stay

I’ve been seeing this trend in other areas too, not only girls fashion. Books like Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls are filled with inspiring stories of brave women across the world, many in STEM fields. Science magazines like Smore Magazine were created to inspire young girls in STEM fields too. Even LEGO came out with the Women of NASA set this year. The movie Hidden Figures about the brilliant African American women working at NASA was a huge hit.

The STEM theme is everywhere now and I believe it’s here to stay. With gender equality and women empowerment on the rise, I think we will continue seeing more and more STEM options for young girls integrated into every day life and I couldn’t be happier about it!
