My daughter and I added a Therapedic Weighted Blanket to our self-care routine to reduce our anxiety.
With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, I thought it was the perfect time to share a post about the Therapedic Reversible Weighted Blanket. Initially, you may not see how the two go together, but read on…
Self-Care
I had been looking into getting a weighted blanket for myself and my daughter for quite some time. Anxiety runs in my family and I believe in doing all I can to proactively mentally, physically and emotionally combat it. Practicing self-care is important tool in helping us stay calm and balanced. Good quality sleep and relaxation time are essential parts of our self-care practice. I’m teaching both of my daughters actually about the importance of self-care too. The more proactive we can be in setting ourselves up for success, the less anxiety we seem to have. This requires practicing mindfulness to know what your triggers are and knowing what your needs are. (More on those topics in another blog post.) Also, I want to state that I got my daughter’s permission to discuss this personal topic. It was something we talked about in depth. We hope anything we share can help others in some way.
So, you may be thinking, “How can a blanket help your anxiety?” I’ve researched quite a bit about the benefits of a weighted blanket and there are so many! Reducing anxiety is just one! Did you know that the Therapedic Reversible Weighted Blanket is known to help you ease tension, relax more, and even help improve your sleep?! Through their soft, deep pressure technology, they use weighted glass pellets in their blankets to create a calming sensation similar to that of a “loving hug” as they explain it.
A Trusted Brand
As I was researching weighted blankets, I started seeing ads pop up on Instagram and Facebook from new companies I had never heard of before. I’ve seen celebrities and reality tv stars posting about them too. You have to be careful because after many reviews I read, it looked like there was one weighted blanket company out there scamming people. It was important to me to find a quality product from a reputable company. Therapedic Reversible Weighted Blankets are sold exclusively in Bed, Bath and Beyond. Knowing that gave me great confidence. Although weighted blankets may seem to be a trend right now, I really believed the theory and research behind them had great merit and it could do us good to have them. I’m so glad I went forward with it because there has not been a single night that we have slept without our blankets since we received them!
While researching the company, I learned that for over sixty years, Therapedic International has dedicated themselves to producing the world’s finest sleep materials. While Therapedic believes in integrating technology and innovation into all of their sleep products, the brand has stuck by the notion that the best products are still the ones that are hand crafted. That’s why each of Therapedic’s sleep products are made with an unwavering commitment to producing quality mattresses and sleep related products. Their weighted blankets come in different sizes such as 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 pounds. They suggest for best results, choose the size that is closest to 10% of your bodyweight.
Improved Sleep with the Therapedic Weighted Blanket
My daughter and I have each been using our weighted blanket for a couple of weeks now. She reported to me, on her own, that she’s been sleeping better with her new blanket! It was music to my ears that 1. She noticed that by herself and 2. She was having such great results from her new blanket. Good quality sleep is known to be so important in helping to keep anxiety under control. It’s pretty well-known that when you don’t get enough sleep you can feel cranky and irritable. Many people who suffer from anxiety deal with racing thoughts and other emotions that often make it difficult to fall and stay asleep. When you have anxiety and don’t get proper sleep, it’s even that much more challenging to manage your emotions. So having something like a weighted blanket to help you be more successful with your sleeping is actually really beneficial.
At night, I have been pulling my comforter aside and using only the Therapedic Reversible Weighted Blanket when I go to sleep. It is really soft and cozy. I was concerned I was going to be able to feel the glass pellets moving around but I do not at all. I actually don’t even realize they’re in there whatsoever. The weight is not too overpowering either. It has a removable zippered machine-washable cover for easy care. Another concern I had was that I was going to be too hot under it, but that has not been the case at all! In fact, I’m actually less hot under the weighted blanket than my regular duvet cover. I have been really comfortable with it and sleeping soundly. Now my only concern is how am I supposed to sleep without it when I travel?
There is so much research out there how quality sleep and good sleep hygiene practices really do help make a difference with one’s ability to cope with stress and reduce anxiety. Therapedic International is a recognized top-10 mattress brand with over 50 licensees producing Therapedic brand products throughout the world.
